The girlfriend is a light sleeper and I can’t stand the heat and since I live along the Skytrain line that means she wants the windows closed and when the windows are closed I’m too hot to sleep. This has led to me finally getting an air conditioning unit.

For $399CDN at Future Shop I acquired a 12,000 BTU unit which is suitable for cooling a 500-650 sq ft area (in Vancouver summers). It’s a Danby which means it’s on lower-middle grade for quality and performance by name, a nice 12,000 BTU unit would run you about double what I paid and it would be library quiet but would otherwise be the same (noise level is what you’re really paying for when you pay more).

The unit works pretty well – better than I expected and the feature set is pretty good. The remote control lets me set the timer so I don’t have to leave it running all day but can have it fire up before I get home. It cools the living/dining area fairly well – enough that she put on a long sleeve from the relative chill – while the bedroom is definitely cooler and comfortable.

The windows are now closed which has cut the noise level down a lot although the unit itself is not that quiet – it’s okay though, I’m not having to crank up the volume more than a couple steps; I could watch a movie with it blowing away if I wanted to which I could not do with the windows and door open.

All in all, it’s not a bad purchase, I’m pretty pleased with it and I think I should have bought it a few years ago.

Update: Ok, I thought about it some more. I probably wouldn’t watch a movie with it if the movie was good and I had popcorn. It would be unsuitable for a movie like Wall-E where you need to hear everything but plenty fine for Snakes on a Plane.

Car Free Vancouver

They had another Car Free Vancouver today which is basically the attempts of hippie tree huggers to shut down small business owners and infuriate people who drive. It’s not that I’m against car free public spaces – I really like public plazas but the way the Car Free folks are approaching it is as stupid as those Critical Mass rides which disrupt traffic and just results in drivers getting pissed off at cyclists.

At Main the shut down resulted in empty stores and an empty street – there were no better than a hundred people who were participating in the street activities, the rest who were in the area where there to eat or get a coffee and most likely they drove (the side streets were full of cars).

If you’re going to try to promote car free public spaces this is just not the way to go about it – find spots in the city where if you shut down a street that there are effective ways to divert cars. That way, drivers won’t get pissed off – those drivers the people who vote for and against these things – you need them to see these spaces as enhancements and not impediments.

It’s going to be easy to do this but it’s possible and it should be done but they need the support of the drivers (homeowners) for this.

God Loves Me

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook you would have noticed that I reported that someone had sent to my phone (via MMS) a photo of their lady parts. As the lady parts were attractive and well presented I take it as a sign that God loves me. Why else would an anonymous woman do this?

The FAQ:

1. What happened? It was sent just after midnight and it woke me up. I was too groggy to recognize what exactly it was but I knew it was someone’s naughty parts and thought it was some kind of joke. When I woke up in the morning I thought I had dreamt it until I checked my phone again and lo and behold there was some pussy on my phone.

2. Why’d you get it? It looks like it was something that she was taking for a special someone and ended up sending to me by accident.

3. You sure it’s not spam? No but I don’t think it’s spam. It came from a local number, the photo was taken on a low-res camera phone and the room it was taken in suggested someone’s bedroom (brown with a basic lamp).

4. Was it nice? She had a brazilian done and she looked reasonably in shape so yes. I figure she wanted to show off the brazilian job as the camera angle was from behind and showed the spots where a brazilian would have removed all the hair.

5. Is it one of your friends? Why would you ask that? Even if it was one of my friend I wouldn’t want to know that. In any case it’s no lady parts I’ve ever seen and since I have access to the internet and a TV I’ve seen a lot of lady parts.

6. Did you reply to her? Not yet. What would I say? “Thanks, it looks great”? Should I be responding?

7. Anything else? People should be careful what they do with their homemade porn or nudie pics.

SAD DAY. I started using Homesite back in the 90′s and was still using it as recently as 2 months ago. To me, it’s the best PC HTML coding software around and I never understood why Adobe didn’t update it or sell it to someone who cared about it as not everyone wants to use Dreamweaver – some of us are real coders.
